The Android-based Samsung Galaxy Beam is the first phone with a built-in camera to test the limits of the operating system. The projector itself isn’t that great but the phone is worth the wait.
With a 3.7” Super AMOLED screen and front-face 8 megapixel camera, it’s no slouch when compared to the other heavy hitters in the phone industry. You’ll also get Bluetooth 3.0, 802.11n WiFi, FM radio, and 1,800mAH battery you’ll be able to handle just about anything. In fact, this phone just might be a contender for one of the most capable Android phones around.
The only drawback is the phone’s bulk. It’s 123×59.8×14.9 mm (4.84×2.35x.5”) and weighs almost 155 g (a full 1/3 of a pound!) The design is also very boxy and not as sleek as most Android phones.
Unfortunately, the DLP pico projector doesn’t hold up its end of the bargain. The images are rather small, tend to wash out in even weak lighting, and won’t project all that far becoming virtually unusable. So why attach such a crappy peripheral to a decent phone? For the gimmick. Samsung clearly wanted to be the first Android phone on the market with a projector.
