Apple Launches iBook Store Across Platforms

This app is pretty slick if it holds up to the specs listed.  It’s an eBook reader from Apple that’s tied to the iBook store and is now available on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.  It’s definitely not a Kindle and was definitely designed for the iPad but it works passably well on the other two platforms.

The app support PDf viewing in addition to giving you multiple options to tweak the book display.  You can choose three different shades for the background of the digital page (alas no oatmeal grey of an E-ink display) and switch between six various improved fonts and sizes.

You also get the ability to read a sample of any book in the store before you buy it which is good because even though the app is free, the books aren’t.  (Except for the complimentary copy of Winnie–the-Pooh.)  The app also features a built-in search feature allowing you quickly find any word or phrase in a given text which is great if you don’t want to take the time to bookmark your favorites.  If you do, the handy upgraded bookmarking features makers that task simpler than ever before.

The catch is that you’re going to have to upgrade to iOS 4.0.

Unfortunately, everything looks a whole lot better on the iPad.  Trying to read an entire book on an iPod is either an act of desperation or born out of sheer boredom.  Still, it’s not a bad app to have and is hands down better than that silly Jiggle app.
