After days of rumors and speculations, some Mac fans thought yesterday that they would be able to buy a laptop for about $800. But the expectations were not met. Yesterday, Apple unveiled its new line of notebooks, made of aluminum (instead of plastic), and was confirmed that this brand will continue being more expensive than PCs that are sold with Windows pre-installed: the cheapest new MacBook will cost $1,299.

This is the starting price of the new 13-inch Mac laptop that will have a hard drive ranging from 160 to 250 GB and 2 GB RAM. The high-end version of the MacBook (MacBook Pro), with a 15-inch screen and designed for professional use, will have a starting price of $1,999. They will have between 2 and 4 GB RAM and up to 320 GB of storage.
Apple will continue selling its original white plastic MacBook that was introduced to the market in May 2006. In this case, the price has been reduced to $999 although some rumors, that were mentioned on hundreds of blogs (including this one), talked about a $800 laptop. At the end of the day, the price reduction was of the order of $100 only. Also, Apple has revamped the ultralight MacBook Air that was designed for the wireless communications era. From now on, this computer, which weighs around 2 pounds, will have a MiniDisplay port. Also, other features have been added including additional 40GB: now it has 120GB of total storage capacity. Prices are ranging from $1,799 to $2,499.
There are not only “stylistic” changes. The new MacBook has a glass touchpad without traditional buttons. Actually, this glass touchpad has certainly been inspired by the iPhone, that allows users to enlarge or reduce objects by dragging a finger over the touch-sensitive surface. Also, the whole keypad is a button you can press down, just like a mouse button, to select objects on the screen.
