Downloadable books and a new age of digital textbooks

The eBook readers are palm-size electronic devices and can store newspapers, magazines, and books as digital content. Although they can be used for recreational reading, the eBooks also can offer a big benefit for students.

The market of eBook readers exploded when Amazon presented its Kindle and Kindle 2. Immediately, some companies such as Sony, and Barnes & Noble, among others, also presented their own electronic reading devices. Although the main profit of the eBook readers is generated by downloads of fiction and non-fiction books, eBooks companies are realizing that there is also a very attractive market if they start to offer digital versions of textbooks. Amazon has already signed a contract with three textbook companies in order to offer digital editions. This could set an important precedent for the transition from voluminous textbooks to information stored in a compact way.

Many professors ask their students to search for information on Internet, read blogs, or download digital content from well-known online websites which are able to supply useful information for courses and the learning process. Well, with the eBook readers, those professors would be able to give instructions to their students to buy the last editions of textbooks, which could be sent to a device of eBooks reading.

There are several advantages of having available textbooks for eBook readers. The first and more obvious one is the weight saving. For example, the average college student takes five courses per semester. This fact could mean that, in general, the students need to buy five or more textbooks, and each one of them weighs several pounds. A student is able to carry 50 pounds on the back at a certain moment, but this may result in a lesion. In comparison, most eBook readers weigh a few ounces and are able to store a thousand books or more, depending on the file size. Therefore, the students can carry all the necessary textbooks in the back pocket of their pants.
