According to several US carriers, Kindle, the wireless reading device from Amazon, will have more rivals very soon.

Tony Lewis from Verizon Wireless, which is the major phone company in North America, said that five companies have already begun to make contacts with Verizon in order to investigate different ways to connect e-book devices. According to the AP, Lewis said we are “going to see a lot of e-readers out there… The interest level is tremendous”.

On the other hand, AT&T, the second-largest US mobile phone carrier, is working on some negotiations with e-reader makers, according to some reports. Besides that, Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO for AT&T’s Mobility and Consumer Markets, affirms that AT&T networks are more similar to those used in many countries around the world, and for that reason, AT&T might be compatible with many international e-readers

Amazon, which recently launched the second generation of its e-reader, only allows to download content in USA if the user is connected through the Sprint Nextel network. At this time, Amazon offers a catalog of more than 100,000 e-books and, currently, the main competitor of the Amazon Kindle is the Sony e-reader, although the distribution of this Sony device has been limited to a very small number of countries.
