Maybe the recent firmware update (version 2.2.1) for the iPhone and the iPod Touch was not as boring as many people think. The vigilant eyes of MacRumors.com found an interesting reference in the code that opens the possibility to wait for a completely new and different iPhone.

Evidence suggests Apple is preparing a new phone

Apparently, buried in the depth of the last firmware version, there is a file that makes reference to a device called “iPhone 2,1″. This iPhone version has never been available to the public and was not mentioned in other firmware updates. To put things into perspective, the original iPhone was always called “iPhone1,1″ and the new iPhone 3G is called “iPhone1,2″. The fact that the first number is different now could indicate that important changes will be released with the new phone. At least that’s what happened when the second generation iPod touch (music player) was introduced as the “iPod 2,1″: among the changes we can cite additional and improved hardware as well as an external redesign that clearly differentiates it from previous versions.

Of course, this discovery confirms the obvious thing: eventually Apple will launch a new version of its very popular smartphone. However, now there is more evidence to suggest the first prototypes are being built and proved: an unidentified developer, who uses PinchMedia to serve ads in his iPhone application, detected two hits from this unannounced model showing up in his monthly report  (PinchMedia is a website that helps mobile application developers grow their businesses through free developer tools).

At the moment, there are many rumors but not official specifications on the next generation of iPhones. Some people speculate that the new iPhones will have more graphic power to transform the device into a gaming platform, and a new ARM processor or communications chip to improve 3G data transmission. Maybe, we’ll know more in June since usually the company launches its new products in that month.
