Though I’m not quite convinced that 3D is the wave of the future that everybody seems to think it is, even I have to admit that some of the gadgetry these companies are pumping out to milk the 3D cow is pretty impressive. One example is the FujiFilm Finepix 3D W3. The new model is based off FujiFilm’s previous attempt at creating a pocket-sized portable 3D camera capable of taking snapshots whenever you wanted it to. That previous attempt was a little less than perfect but FujiFilm seems to have listened to the critiques and come back with a much better product the second time around.
First of all, it’s lighter (though still almost half a pound) thinner, and 400 cheaper. Even that wouldn’t be enough to save it if the hardware hadn’t been improved, but it has. The larger 3.5 inch LCD is great for previewing your shots and video clips (which are now in 720p HD) and has 4X more pixels that the screen on the first model. The HDMI 1.4 output is amazingly easy to use and great for plugging and playing in your shiny new 3D TV.
In addition, you’ll get a 3X zoom, 10 megapixel CCD sensors, and RealPhoto processor (all of which were on the previous model but somehow work this time. Though the camera still suffers from poor low-light shooting, the user interface and physical layout of the camera have been tweaked enough that you may be able to overlook that.
However, all of that doesn’t really mean a thing if the 3D isn’t good. Unfortunate (or fortunately depending on your point of view) this shooter lives up to its price tag. While it’s not going to blow you away, it will put 3D capabilities in your pocket for $500.
