The days when how cool you were was determined by the size of your stereo are over. Nowadays, quality is the key determining factor for any sounds system and smaller is better. JVC’s new line of wood cone mini stereos put a premium (and a premium price) on quality but throw in a little splash of style just for giggles.

These stereos feature the obligatory iPhone/iPod dock but they also still remember older media such as CDs (now you can blow the dust off your collection). In addition, they feature USB ports and even aux audio ports so you can plug just about any digital music device in and get high-quality sound out.
What makes these stereos really sing though is of course “the superior acoustic characteristics of wood.” The company claims that wood is the perfect material to generate high-definition sound because it delivers clear and crisp tones that can’t be achieved with synthetic materials. In addition, the impurities in the wood itself increase the character of the sound.
Now that your science lesson is over for the day, you’re going to have to troll around on Asian websites if you want to get your hands on one of these—as of writing, they’re only available in Japan. However, the US market has seen some of JVC’s other wood cone stereos appear, so keep your fingers crossed that these little beauties make the jump.
Expect to pay around $150, give or take, if you do spot one.
