Magic Jack to Undercut Skype with Free internet Calling

VOIP sure seems like the way of the future (especially when you compare the prices to other standard landline operators.)  However, even cheap alternatives to the big name companies like Skype have some cost associated with them.  Sure, you can make free Skype to Skype calls but if you want to call someone who still has one of those crusty old landlines, you have to pay a fee (assessed in Skype Credits so it doesn’t sound like real money—but it’s still money.)

However, MagicJack, the company behind the $20 a year phone bill craze, has announced that it will soon offer software that will allow anyone to make completely free VOIP calls to anyone, including folks still using landlines.

What’s the catch, you ask?  Surely they can’t be doing this out of the kindness of their hearts.  They’re not.  MagicJack will be able to bill the companies who host the landlines for the individuals that you are calling.  They get their money but it doesn’t cost you a thing.

It sounds great in practice—I’m all for cutting fees—but we’ll have to wait to see how it works out.  MagicJack has been at the center of a little scandal as of late pertaining to the very restrictive limitations they put on their standard service.  It’s not enough to be a total deal breaker but I’m not going to be an early adopter on this one.
