An official press statement emitted by the company claims the new Hitachi drive is optimized for the power and performance requirements of rack-mounted servers and networked storage arrays.

These new drives are available with capacities of 147GB and 300GB and are shipped with a dual-port 6Gb/s Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface that sends data faster by using a superior transmission speed compared to its 3Gb/s predecessor.
The Ultrastar C10K300 is designed to provide a higher server/storage density because it has a compact 2.5-inch design, a low-power profile and improved thermal features. The small form factor drive occupies 70 percent less physical space and consumes 65 percent less power than other 3.5-inch enterprise drives. The Ultrastar C10K300 is the first Hitachi enterprise-class drive that incorporates Advanced Power Management capabilities, which allows Hitachi to achieve a power specification of 3.4 watts and 6.1 watts in active operating mode.
The Ultrastar C10K300 uses halogen-reduced components to support the “green” computing initiatives that nowadays are becoming more and more important at data centers. This hard drive has been included in the classification Hitachi EcoTrac, which is used to highlight products that minimize the environmental impact through the product’s whole life cycle including production design, manufacturing, operation and disposal.
