Apple may have some competition in the super-smart phone market when Nokia releases the N8 in the fall of 2010.  The device is packing some serious hardware and sports a handful of additions that iPhone 3GS owners have been whining about (I mean wanting) since the “Jesus phone” turned out to be a little less than they had expected.

Running on the Symbian^3 operating system, the Nokia N8 features a 12 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and Xenon flash for capturing those high definition images.  The cool part is that camera also record high definition video.  With optics like that, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Nokia’s newest monster will seriously put the hurt on portable HD recorders like the Flip MinoHd.  The device even sports a nifty HDMI output so there’s no need for a third-party device and lengthy conversion process, just plug the phone into your HD TV and play.

The touch screen on the Nokia device will mimic (if not match) Apple’s  3.5” touch screen and supports multi-touch pinch and zoom motions.  The hardware behind the screen is powerful enough to multitask and supports 2D and 3D imagery—the first of its kind on a commercial mobile phone in its price range.

The phone will also feature multiple customizable home screens and have access to tons of Ovi Store apps, widgets, and maps to supplement the on-board pedestrian/in-car GPS system.  The device will also support software developed within the Qt software platform.  In other words, look for a lot of independent apps and user-created software.

You’d expect all of this software to consume a lot of storage space.  That’s why the N8 comes standard with 16GB of on board storage.  If that’s not enough for you, Nokia also included the coveted microSd expansion port allowing for up to 32 additional Gigabytes.  That’s some serious portable storage.

Upon release in Quarter three 2010, Nokia will be offering any of its 5 snazzy colors for $494 (that’s without carrier rebates/discounts) which is a far cry lower than the Apple 3GS’s $800 price tag when it launched.  Start saving your pennies.
