I’ve always been a fan of NVIDIA cards. No matter what generation the piece of hardware I get my hands on is, they always seem to outperform the competitions (especially ATI.) However, in recent years, NVIDIA’s entries in the 3D acceleration race have been less than stellar. Plagued by overheating issues and on-board processors that gobble up too much power, the company’s graphics cards have taken some flak from tech reviewers around the web. However, the new GeForce GTX 460 is poised to put NVIDIA back on the top of the heap.
This sleek little performer can handle pretty much anything you throw at it and easily overclocks for performance that’s closer to a top-tier $500 card.
This little $200 card gives you 786MB of onboard RAM saddled atop the GF104 core (which is much more efficient that it’s GTX 465 predecessor. However, for around $30, Engadget suggests you opt for the full 1GB model which sports extra L2 cache and ROPs but Anandtech may make you think twice. In their opinion,
“The 1GB card does not eclipse the 768MB card, but this is going to lead to a lot of buyer confusion. The best GTX 460 is not the $199 one.”
