If you’re looking to get your grubby paws on one of Pixel Qi’s revolutionary dual display screens, you’re going to have to wait a little longer. The first batch of screens went on sale July 1st here in the states but they sold out within 24 hours. However, you can pre-order from the second batch now and they will ship when available. But why would you want one anyway?
These 10.1 inch reflective LCD screens are capable of switching between E-ink display and regular LCD display (even within the same screen!—see the pic for details.) these screens are 30% more energy efficient than a standard LCD screen which may not sound like much but when you’re operating on a small netbook with limited battery capacity, every little bit helps.
The first editions of these screens are do-it-yourself upgrades for current devices and guaranteed to work with Samsung N130 and Lenovo S10-2 machines but tech-heads have already found workarounds (and posted them on the web) for other size-appropriate portable devices such as ACER and Asus.
These screens aren’t cheap at $275 but if you’re a hardcore netbook user, the price may be worth the benefits.
Future iterations of these innovative new displays will feature touch sensitivity and higher resolutions. In fact, Pixel allowed Engadget a sneak preview of an Atom Moorestown running a 10 in slate with capacitive technology. I would bet that standalone tablet devices won’t be far in the future.
