Apparently Sharp wants to accelerate the Blu-ray penetration. Its new Aquos BD Combo Series for  Full-HD 1080p LCD TVs includes, for the first time, a side-loading slot for Blu-ray discs, DVDs or CDs. You can insert a disk into the TV, then turn it on and start to play it.

Those TVs also have a  “Pure Mode” than can optimize the Blu-ray display settings in an intelligent way, such as aspect ratio.

Initially, this looks like a good thing (at least, it is good for Sharp in order to promote its brand). The combo looks pretty convenient in practice and could be a sign of things to come.

Other functions include a new ASV Superlucent panel that, according to Sharp, “applies an ultra-smooth finish that minimizes gloss while intensifying panel brightness and contrast”. Besides, it has a 176-degree viewing angle and a PC input that allows TVs to work as a computer monitor.

The Aquos BD Combo Series include some entry-level models with 32-inch and 37-inch screens (the price would start at $1,100). Other models include versions with 42-inch, 46-inch and 52-inch screens (120 Hz). The 42-inch and 52-inch versions will be released in February, while the other ones are being released this month.
