Who says PCs have to be pretty? Why can’t they be ugly as sin? That’s what designers at GammaTech have seemingly been asking themselves, or at least that’s what it looks like when you view their latest creation: the D12C convertible laptop. The computer is undoubtedly ugly but when it comes to computing it’s the guts of the thing that are really important. That’s where the D12C really shines.
Internally the convertible boasts a Core i5 540UM processor and 8GB of memory (though you can choose less memory during the customization process.) There’s the obligatory WiFi and an option to include a multi-card reader as well. There’s an open 2.5 inch slot to stuff in your favorite hard drive as well. As far as operating systems, the only standard option right now is Windows 7.

Externally users are treated to a 1.3 megapixel web camera and a chassis that earned its MIL-STD-810G rating the hard way. The PC is drop, shock, and dust resistant and even built to shed water like a beaver’s coat (though I wouldn’t go dropping it in a pond or anything rash like that).
For something that’s so rugged, you wouldn’t expect to be paying peanuts—and you won’t be. I can’t tell you just how much this thing is going to cost but I’d guess it would be out of the range of most consumer PC buyers and somewhere squarely in the range of the pro-sumer.
