Chrysler was one of the first auto makers to offer WiFi connectivity devices in their cars but Subaru may just be the first car company to make that option affordable. The company announced recently that it plans to offer potential owners of its 2011 model Subaru Outbacks the option of adding fully integrated WiFi mobile hotspots into their automobiles.
If you thought your local law enforcement agencies were having a hard time dealing with distracted drivers due to cell phone use, how do you think they’ll be able to handle people playing Facebook games? All joking aside, the integrated boxes will cost roughly $550 installed—which means they’re not as pricey as Chrysler’s option but still may be a little too expensive for consumers to swallow. After all, MiFi is cheaper but Subaru is betting that many of its drivers aren’t tech savvy enough to know they have options.
Unfortunately, the $550 price tag is just for the box. Monthly service charges are expected to run about $30 per month. Still no word on data restrictions or limitations but if the auto maker has learned anything from the backlash against AT&T’s new tiered data plans, that $30 may just be unlimited.
So next time you’re browsing your local Subaru car lot, ask about getting the internet in your SUV.
