One of the most important consoles has a new version. Nintendo has made official what the Japanese media had reported. The company, which is the developer of the platform game Super Mario, is getting ready for the launching of a new portable console that will be called Nintendo DSi.

The device is a revised and improved version of the current DS Lite which is used by more than 80 million people in the world, and has almost the same internal architecture. The new console will also have two screens as its predecessor, although only one will be touch-screen, not both as reported by some media. In the same way, Nintendo confirmed that both screens will be 17% bigger at 3.25 inches. Nintendo DSi will also have two digital cameras, a 3-megapixel camera on the exterior of the case, a 0.3-megapixel camera just below the upper screen on the hinge, and an SD card slot that actually will make available some features similar to those of many mobile cameras.
The cameras will also play a role in games that the company is developing for the future. The early Gameboy players will miss the compatibility with old cartridges that are discontinued (of course, the current DS cartridges are compatible). In spite of the innovations, the new console will be thinner than the current machine and 12% smaller. At the beginning, Nintendo DSi will only be available in black and white colors.
After decades of creating video games consoles only, Nintendo has decided to listen to the people and add multimedia capabilities in its new version. The reason for this could be the necessity to compete with its rival: the Sony PSP that has more multimedia capabilities. Actually, for the first time, Nintendo DS has become the best-selling video game machine in Japan as this sales number has already exceeded that of PlayStation2 from Sony, which used to be the most-sold video game machine.
