The Tachyon XC HD Helmet cam is a great digital accessory for those outdoor sports enthusiasts who enjoy sharing their adventures with everyone after the fact. While it’s high quality enough for professionals to use (not to mention completely waterproof), the ease of use and small price tag ($179) make it great for amateurs as well. So what does that little price tag buy?

The device runs off two AA batteries (which last for around 3 and half hours)and records HD video onto the removable SD card. A little LCD displays the camera status and there’s only a couple of buttons to memorize—which is great because fumbling with a camera while travelling down the ski slope isn’t exactly the wisest course of action. The button is a bit difficult to manage if you’ve got gloves on but the handy remote (with just a single massive button) is easily stashed in a pocket.
The video quality is okay (it only shoots 720p) but the image is quite bright compared to similar models. The audio is a bit weak (okay, it’s really weak) but thankfully there’s no air “woosh” across the microphone. One of the best features is the multiple mounting brackets available (though not included). There’s even picatinny rail mounts for rifles/pistols.
So for $170 you could do a lot worse and if you want to go better you’re going to have to pay a lot more. Hit up Tachyon Inc. to order or to check out their other models.
