Low-cost flights, low-cost computers, low-cost cars. Now, the “buy cheap” trend is coming to the games consoles industry. A partnership between American company Qualcomm (major chips maker for mobiles) and Brazilian video game and electronics company Tectoy (in Manaus) has developed the Zeebo console that will be available soon.

The interesting thing about this new video game device is that it is intended to be sold mainly in developing countries, particularly in Brazil, India, China and Russia, where some promoters have identified a market niche that has 800 millions people (mainly young people) who are willing to play by using consoles that are considerably cheaper than the current ones.

Price is the main attraction of Zeebo because it will cost 199 dollars in Brazil, which constitutes a third part of the current price for Wii and PS3. In addition, the basic Zeebo will include four games: Action Hero 3D, Treino Cerebral, Prey Evil and Quake; all of them will be translated into Portuguese.

The technology is provided by the multinational company Qualcomm (that owns 43% of Zeebo); this way,  Qualcomm diversifies its business portfolio and takes advantage of its knowledge  in the field of chips for cell phones. The Zeebo console has several components provided by Qualcomm, including processors, graphic cards, 3G connections and different pieces of software.
